These two dresses from the Chanel Spring/Summer 2014 RTW Collection were the inspiration for my design. I was/ am loving both the textiles and and silhouette. So I had to have mine.

So I have finally finished my dress. It only took me a month ( being sarcastic here). I first had to redraft my knit top sloper. For one I have gotten a bit smaller since I perfected my first one last summer and two I needed a lower hip for this dress. Then I took like two weeks off due to the only thing that can get in the way of me and my sewing... FAMILY.

Once I was back in the studio, cutting out was a lot easier than I expected. I think this is my first time cutting out single layer, I basically treated the fabric as though it was a plaid. What took me a lot longer than I expected was matching and hand sewing the seams. Other than that sewing this dress was quite easy. The main body and skirt portion is made up of a polyester ruffle knit. For the sleeves, neckband and skirt band I used a cotton knit. The skirt band is made up of two layers to help give it support.

Quick Stats:

Self drafted dress

8 pattern pieces (front, back, sleeve, neckband, front skirt band, back skirt band, front skirt, back skirt)

Sleeves are just below elbow

Dress is ankle length

Semi fitted design

This was my own design inspired by Chanel S/S 2014 Collection

For the fabric I used both a cotton knit and a polyester ruffle knit I got here in Riyadh. You can get your own from fabric.com. I had been eyeing this fabric for probably at least a year and I really wanted after seeing MazzyGirl's review. I have at least another meter left I think a simple tee maybe in mines or one of my daughter's near future.
So here are my very late MAGAM garments. November's boatneck top and December's Betsy Jacket from DIY Clothes. While the top looks very good on me the neckline could use some more work. I think its mostly fabric related than anything, when I used facings for it they did not lay a flat as I wanted them to and when I used bias tape it made the neckline stand away from my body. In both treatments I used self fabric and the fabric is stretch embroidered cotton. I plan to work with some more and try to perfect it since it fits me so well.

December's Betsy jacket was not as successful as my top. Since my shirt is a bit fitted and the jacket is suppose to be a bit loose, I went on and just drafted this one from scratch using Cal's directions again. Once it was made up in muslin I noticed I had a bit of fullness in the armhole area. I darted it out and transferred the dart to the shoulder making a princess seam. Since I had plan on using a denim I decided to also add front patch pockets to give it sort of a classic denim jacket look. Well once I had all the changes made and sewn up again in muslin, I realized that all that extra fullness at my waist is just not a good look. So I'm going to have to play around with this one also before I can commit to some fashion fabric.

Suggestions Welcomed

I know it has been a while since I last posted but like life it has its ups and downs. But I have been thinking a lot about something I said in this post, I mean why not try if I like it so much. But then the fear and self doubt that no matter how good I get I'm missing something that I can't teach myself or is only gained with years of industry experience or that flat piece of paper proving to the world I can do it someone showed me how. But if I'm designing and making my own patterns and putting them out there who needs it if my work can speak for its self. Now comes the question how do I get that good on my own? I have the passion and drive but my options are slim at best. I'm smack dab in the middle of the desert with no opportunities available to me not much support and funds are extremely limited. I don't say this get any sympathy or anything just stating the facts and what I am up against. But I still feel all is not lost.

Ever since I first heard/read about the 10,000 rule 47 months ago to the day, I have been fascinated by the idea that I could become really good at something if I could put in the time. Even when I go back and read my comment I left my desire to learn patternmaking was there. It has been for along time now but its only recently that I started really applying myself and thinking about doing it on a professional level. I have since listened to the audio version of Outliers and it kept me intrigued but something kept nagging at me. I think that was this nagging that has mostly kept me from trying the 10k hour challenge, it has to be more to it. So like most thinks I get a sudden interest in I did a lot of research which lead me to the book Talent Is Overrated and found that it was more to it than just putting in the hours. Deliberate practice

Deliberate practice is a form of practice usually developed by a teacher or instructor to move the learner beyond their comfort level in an effort to improve performance. There are a few key features to deliberate practice 1) highly demanding mentally, requires lots of focus and concentration 2) designed to improve performance 3) must continue over long periods of time 4) must be repeated 5)requires constant feedback after all how are you to know if your improving 6) it isn't always fun.

PM - T + 10k+ DP= Mastery

So how do I put all of this together patternmaking minus teacher plus10k hours (I'm sure I can do this part) plus deliberate practice to get to that master level? I don't know, right now I'm using DIY Clothes and I do because it designed as a self teaching book and there is no other like it, to teach myself but I'll be done soon and then what, what do I do to push myself past this level? Food for though I guess. I'll leave with one of my favorite phrases I have found years ago when I first started looking into the 10k hour rule.

necessary component of success, but, alone, it is not enough. Vision without
action deteriorates into daydreaming. Without persistent practice, passion
fades"</ins>

Rhonda over at Rhondas Creative Life is currently working her way through the MSDP certification program and I have been eagerly awaiting post about her progress. At one time I was considering this program. It was not to get certified at least not right away but to use it as a self teaching guide (note: this is NOT a course), but the board had issues with that so I just dropped it but I was still curious about it.So when I saw that Rhonda had signed up and would blog her progress of getting certified of course I had to follow along :-)

First up is the burn test. I thought that maybe others would like to see how fibers are identified using a burn test before she posted her results. These can be found in the book above. I got this book on sale when I first started sewing years ago, at the time it was way to advance for me, it was like reading a foreign language but it was about sewing clothes so I knew I wanted it and I have since used it many times over the years, its no longer in print but if you can find a good copy I do recommend it.

For my November garment I'm planning a boat neck / bateau neckline top. It will be very similar to New Look 6808 which I have made up a few times and is one of my favorite patterns but its not mine, my draft and the fit is still not perfect. So I'll be using my own top pattern that has taken me months to draft, fit, adjust, fit again, and adjust some more. The front fits like a glove but the back still needs work, its still a work in progress but its so much better than anything I could get in ready to wear and beats hacking away at a ready made pattern. I don't know what it is but I just love making my own patterns. If I had the training I think being an indie patternmaker/designer would be my calling. I mean sometimes when I get maybe an hour or so in my little studio to work on a pattern, I can get so caught up in it that 1 hour has turned into 2 hours and I still don't want to leave but I have just made dinner late oops. I heard that if there was something you could do all day without being paid and loved it then that would be your dream career and that is how I feel about sewing and patternmaking.

Anyway so here is my mood board sort of for November.
Until next time, happy sewing...
So here is my completed October garment for the AGAM sew along. I'm pleased with how my first attempt at this jeans skirt went but for the next one I am going to change some things up. First off is that extra long fly, I did go by the book for adding it but in none of my RTW jeans or skirts do I have a fly that long. Next up are the front pockets, I did draft them correctly and exactly how I wanted them but they are not usable . I forgot to take into account pocket depth, so while I can put something in them there is no guarantee that it will still be in there after a good walk, hey I'm still learning. I was also able to draft a shaped waistband and the fit is so much better.

The top that you can partly see is the muslin for my DIY Clothes basic shirt. I'm still working on it because of some many changes that I needed to make for it. Still even the final top won't be done for a while since I need to go notions shopping to get some much needed buttons.
Now time to start thinking about November's AGAM piece.

Until next time, happy sewing...
Just a quick check in, nothing much to say but only to show that I am working. The pattern work is almost done, so I hope to be sewing soon. My fabric is a black denim with some stretch, it a bit of a pattern to it not sure what to call it tho. I still need to check my notions drawers to make sure I have everything I need, if not then I'll need to get out soon.

A denim/ jean style skirt again. I say again because last year I attempted this project and ended up with horrible results that left me scared for a few months. But I can't let one failure keep me from trying again. I just love skirts especially denim ones, they work so well in my line of work ( read: SAHM with a busy and wild bunch). And like jean pants they are easy, comfortable, fashionable and very versatile. Unlike last year I will work entirely from my own pattern or using my patternmaking books to help me instead of ready made patterns, so this will be completely self drafted so I know it will work.

For those of us that prefer ready made patterns here is a bit of denim skirt inspiration:

So its been a while since I posted and the last time I posted I mentioned a sew along I was planning on joining the Fall Essentials Sew Along 2013. Its been while and I still have yet to <strike>sew</strike> complete anything for it but that doesn't mean I'm not working, as a matter of fact I have been working a lot but not as productive as I would like. I'm still working on my shirt from DIY Clothes but with all of my modifications and testing its taking a lot longer. But more on that in the coming days.

Now some recent news, I just found another more long term sew along, the Garment A Month Sew Along hosted by SarahLiz, which I think is more doable for me. The rules are easy. At the beginning of each month post your garment for that month and it has to be for yourself. Once its completed. lable your blog post 'a garment a month' and blog about it, easy peasy. I'm starting a little late since I just found the sew along couple of days ago but I still plan to try for the month of October. I really need something else besides the shirt which is still in the muslin/drafting stage to get me going again. What will I make for my AGAM, not sure yet but whatever it will be I plan to self draft.

Until next time, happy sewing...

I'm still around just not as much as I would like right now. Besides going back to homeschooling some of my kids this school year, my internet availability has been very sporadic and it looks like that will be the case for a few more weeks, I get on when I can.

On anther note I'm still working my way through DIY Clothes, but I have slowed down a bit since I'm working with wovens now and have to fit the pattern so it can be used for future designs. With this extra work I am learning a lot about fitting and also about my unique shape. I hope to post something soon about it within the next few days on what I have done so far. I also have a ton of blog reading to catch up on, but one that got my attention is the Fall 2013 Essentials Sew-Along. This is right up my alley since part of my patternmaking is to have a set of those patterns that make up MY wardrobe essentials. I already have most of my Fall sewing planned which mostly includes my patternmaking projects and a few extras. I'm hoping that the sewing and blogging will pick back up once I have a base pattern I'm happy with.
As I recently said I would take pics on my next fabric shopping trip and I did. I bought DD along to be my camera girl, so these are all taken by her. These are of just one store, I don't know the name but all the fabrics in here are 10SAR per meter which translates to $2.67 USD per meter or 1.70 GBP. I did visit a couple of other shops but I did not get the time that I needed since it was late and shops were starting to close up as a matter of fact I didn't even make it to the notions shop.

There is no cutting table in the store, you just call one of the 3 or 4 men that are walking around and they just cut it right there and send it to the front for you.

This is my last variation on my basic t-shirt before I move onto wovens. I wanted to try something again that was all my own so I decided to do a top with a cowl and peplum. For this peplum I added more fullness by slashing and spreading pattern piece that I used my last top and then using some basic knowledge that I got from studying a ready to wear sweater, I drafted the cowl using the neckband as a starting guide. My Homer Simpson Do'h moment didn't come until I was attaching the cowl and realized I didn't lower the neckline so the cowl was not as big and as low as I wanted. I was in such a rush that day and it was not one of my usual sewing days. It was more like when ever I found sometime even if it was five minutes I went into my room and did something but nothing to focused including the pattern drafting. By the end of the day the top was complete but with that huge mistake and I did not have enough fabric to try and recut another cowl so I just left it , just call it a curtle (cowl turtle mix) LOL. I do plan to try again but first I want to move on a little bit with some woven tops.

This is also my first item in the Autumn 6PAC over at Stitcher's Guild.

Here is the second variation of the basic t-shirt called the Charlotte top. This was one project I was trying to get around and make it work another way. I don't mind as a matter of fact I want a basic pattern for a slouchy or loose fitting tunic t-shirt but what gives is the drawstring at the neckline on this one, it just makes look like a sack literally and I' not feeling it.

It maybe partly my fault how much of a sack it is. In the directions for changing the pattern Cal suggest adding 1 inch to center front and center back but I added 2, I really wanted a full tunic tee and it came out full but then again it it maybe that drawstring neckline. For the sleeves I did not shorten them as much as the book calls for but instead shortened my sleeves from 3/4 length to just below elbow. I still added fullness to the sleeve but I did not gather it by adding elastic instead I just left it loose.
I did not have anything I wanted to use for the drawstring and I did not like the look of my self fabric ties so I just used some trim I found in my sewing room for a temporary substitute .

My fabric collection was already pretty small and this lesson on t-shirts has left my knit collection pretty thin so I don't think I'l be doing too many more tees so I'll be moving on to woven tops soon.

Here is my version of the peplum T-shirt. It was quite easy to do. Using my basic t-shirt pattern, I traced it on to tracing paper then cut it apart at the waist. I then lengthened the lower half which became the peplum about an inch. On the peplum piece starting from the hem I cut it four times up to the waist seam and evenly spread each piece it to make is semi circular. From there it is just truing the seam line and adding seam allowance and did the same for the back. I was just so into the flow of making the pattern that I did not even think to take pics, maybe next time.

I like it so much I actually have at least two more planned but I'll finish out this t-shirt lesson before I get to them. Also I think I'm going to draft a facing instead of using the neckband piece, I think it makes the the top look sporty when I want a more casual look, but that is what muslins are for. And with all of this patternmaking and muslins I'm starting to run really low on knits so I think I'll be planning a shopping trip soon and I'll try to take pics there too.

So I'm planning to go off track a little and test out my patternmaking skills on my own, I still plan to make the next the tee which is the Charlotte Top. But right now I really want a this Simplicity top with the peplum, I'm not going to try and do the upper half with the knot detail, just looks too hot for me. So we shall see.
So here is MY version of the Marguerite tee, I like the color blocking idea but wanted something a little different. So after some internet snoop shopping I went with an asymmetrical yoke. That's how many muslin it took me to get the best t-shirt pattern I have ever had.

Muslin 6: I call this one a semi final because I made the neckband too wide but other than this I think I am done. I have already made the changes to my neckband piece so now I am ready to move on to the first variation aka Marguerite t.

Muslin number 1: The neckline was way too high for my liking and both the shoulder length and sleeves too long.

Muslin number 2: Sleeves still too long, shoulder length still too long and forgot to shorten the neck band so after it was attached it stood away from my body.

Muslin number 3: A little be better on all adjustments but still not happy. With each muslin I just adjusted the original pattern never redrafting the pattern. This time I'm going to start a new draft. To help me I studied a few ready made patterns in my collection and retook some of my measurements.

Muslin 4: This time around I decided to completely draft my pattern instead of readjusting the paper pattern especially since it had been so long since I had worked with it. I have a small notebook that I using to keep all of my notes in so I had an idea of all of the changes I needed to make for this pattern. But for some reason I forgot to put in my sleeve depth from the last draft and I also forgot to lower my neckline. And this is the very issue I had with this draft. Also I wanted it a bit longer in the bodice.

Muslin number 5: This one was never meant to be finished, this is one of those " what was I thinking" fabric purchases. I was so hoping that my last muslin was going to be it, but it wasn't and somewhat deflating when I realized that I was going to need to redraft the whole pattern again. it. So I redrafted this one again and I was determined to get it right even if I needed to do it three more times. After three drafts in two months I think now I can whip up a t-shirt pattern without even opening the book.

This one so far was the best bodice was but the sleeves needed a bit of fixing. So how I drafted the sleeve cap with too much ease so it made the sleep puff out funny in the back and also the bicep was a bit tighter than I liked. So I was a bit happier since this meant I needed to only redraft the sleeve

New Look 6735: I sewed this one up after muslin number 5, I wanted something to compare my draft to. Looking and comparing a flat pattern is one thing and then its another when it is in 3D form. I was mostly wanting to see the finished sleeve and neckline. When it comes to fit my draft is way better even though this was sewn using my size according to New Look sizing. After comparing I think my sleeve draft is right on point and so is my neckline.

I've started on muslin number 4 and I'm a little more optimistic compared to two months ago. I have completely redrafted my pattern and made some significant changes and some not so much. So for now we will have to wait an see what the outcome will be. I will say this is really a learning experience and the more that I do and learn the more confident I feel in making my own patterns.
So I have finished the first three skirts in Design-It-Yourself Clothes, and now I'm returning back to T-shirts the second lesson I guess you can say. Again I have drafted the T-shirt more times than I can remember but not all drafts made it to the muslin stage. The last ones I worked with for a while but still after three muslins I still was not completely happy but I learned a lot. Mostly where and how to measure my body. I was hoping to sign up for Cal's t-shirt drafting class over at Creativebug during their last $9.99 sale but had issues when it came to payment and now it seems to be no longer available. So on my own I guess it will continue to be.

A quick run down of my last attempt, my first muslin the neckline was way too high for my liking and both the shoulder length and sleeves too long.

Muslin number two: sleeves still too long, shoulder length still too long and forgot to shorten the neck band so after it was attached it stood away from my body.

Muslin number three: a little be better on all adjustments but still not happy. With each muslin I just adjusted the original pattern never redrafting the pattern. This time I'm going to start a new draft. To help me I studied a few ready made patterns in my collection and retook some of my measurements.

These are the three patterns I studied to figure out shoulder length, neckline shape, sleeve length, and armsyce shape. I DID NOT COPY ANYTHING, just to let everyone know right now. So I'm working on a new draft now and hope to have something to show with in the next few days.

Until next time, happy sewing...

After my last skirt I was ready to jump on this one hoping it would be a much better experience, and this one did not disappoint. I did have a couple of bumps but nothing like my last skirt. So the second variation on the basic skirt is called the Rosie.

Description from DIY Clothes "This one's a sturdy little workwear-inspired number with a center front seam, a waistband, big patch pockets, and some sassy little side slits at the hem."

I kept the skirt pretty much the same, instead of shortening it though I kept it the same length and still did the side slits. So I was able to follow most of the directions given in DIY Clothes. I did the patch pockets according to the book's directions, I already had a waistband so that I did not need to draft that. I did not shorten my pattern but I did add a mark to the side seam to let me know where to stop sewing for the side slits. For the button placket I did originally follow Cal's suggestion of no more than 5 inches long but for me that was too short. I was not able to pull the skirt up over my hips with such a small opening. So took out the placket and undid part of the side seam until I was able to get it over my hips. It turns out I needed 7 inches and I had just enough space since my pocket opening starts at that point.

I also kept my welt pocket from the basic skirt pattern.

Sewing up the skirt was pretty much a breeze including the topstitching. But hen it came to the buttonholes that's where I ran into problems as you can see. I used the same needle for the buttonholes that I used for the topstitching, since I was using buttonhole twist for both. This turned out to be a problem, the needle turned out to be too small to handle the thick thread and zigzag stitching together. This gave me a nest of fabric for my first attempt and once I got the thread out it left a very visable mar on the side of my skirt. I'm not going to worry about it too much since I wear my tops out. If it starts to become a problem I may try to add some fusible interfacing to the wrong side to try and strengthen the area a bit.
